Future Plans

All of the PIH-EMR systems are helping our staff and collaborators provide high quality care, while also providing important information for donors, researchers, and internal reporting requirements. However, we are constantly looking to improve and expand upon the systems. We have set our own goals for both the short and long term, and appreciate any feedback and suggestions from people interested in this work. Some of our plans include:

Short-term plans
  • Make reporting tools more user-friendly. This will allow non-programmers to create forms and generate reports from that data.

  • Create forms and tools for MDR-TB management in OpenMRS, including drug order entry and sputum sample tracking.
  • Add more sophisticated tools to manage drug dispensing and forecast drug requirements.

Long-term plans
  • Promote the use of EMR systems for developing countries with software and training.

  • Establish and publish best practices for the system.

  • Improve language capabilities beyond French, Spanish and English in collaboration with the Millennium Villages project.
  • Implement Spatial Patient Tracking using GPS devices to document patient locations.
